ok so this may be one of the last blogs as the semester comes to a close. I have finalised my presentation format; a newspaper spreadsheet. The felt the idea of a poster was a bit dry and didn’t get my idea across as effectively. I will collate my research on biopolymers, ecosystems, and waste management and present it in the form of newspaper articles. Each article will address an issue relating to bioplastic products and sustainability in the future. I will create a scenario in the year 2013 where the Australian government has legalised the dumping of bioplastic material into the ocean.

Definition~ “A Message conveyed in order to support and spread a particular opinion or point of view, engaging both the intellect and the emotions of the audience.” Its funny (and scary) because I found that definition under ‘marketing’ and ‘propaganda’. The media and newspapers use this technique in catchy headings and imagery on the front page. I will use this same technique, however I’ll try and leave out any false information. Muwhahaha

P.S. Hopefully I can get my hands on some edible bioplastic to bring to class next week. Peace

My kombucha experiment is going well i think. About 3 days ago I finally received my bottles of kombucha tea in the mail. (Such a long long processes) So I have since followed some instructions I found on the internet to grow my own mother. At this stage no changes have taken place but it may take several weeks before a decent result is seen. I’m hopeful that I can gain some result in the time we have left. This result will then hopefully be able to clearly inform my final outcome. Bellow are some pics of my making process…

Since my last update my beans have been growing well. After spending this weekend away I got home to find that 3 of my experiments have been successful! The broad beans have found their way out of a dark box to the light, started growing happily inside the plastic tubing and have chosen a path to the light over clear or dark plastic tube.
The beans in my other experiments are growing well and I hope to be able to start training the growth along a stick and cutting them soon now they are reaching a suitable height.

http://www.blublu.org/sito/video/video.htm

how it communicates its content?

Digital folio of street art that graphically ties in with the subject matter, animated and cartoony – a little scrapbook.

what you like about it and why.

I like the way the site is navigated, it is uninterupted and is easy to use whilst still being really quirky. It is curious and fun. What story does it tell, narrative does it invoke? It brings alive a global network of streetart and ties then together as the narrative through humanising them as a character that is travelling. The main tool in this is animating of “Muto” as a faux doco. The overall design of the website is a notebook which contextualises the content. It invokes a sense of grass roots urban activism. It is interesting the idea of the walls coming alive -the streetscape itself living and breathing. Of literally standing up – adding to the sense of street activism. The narrative starts with the alientation of the friendly lil alien street art. then gradually more and more street art starts moving.

How does it position the characters and the structure of their lives around the design? The product is the designs of the art which can be bought in the gallery. However this is only one aspect of the whole site which is more importantly a tool for a global narrative of artistic activism. Through this it placecs the characters as embodied by the moving artpieces and humanised street art as the david and corporate urban civilisation as Goliath.

I’ve been looking about on the Superuse and RCA websites to get a feel of they type of presentation and story telling method i like.
to
Firstly design that uses off cuts, by products or waste interests me greatly. I love how a discarded piece can be utilised to make a totally new object or it’s form inspires a new life for it.
Anneke Jakobs‘ work is beautiful and interesting i particularly like the chandelier .
The work by Trashformaciones is also another great one especially the kitchen sink cube and bathtub chairs. So again the idea of reusing but not always just thinking about the final product but what else it could then produce, like with the sink cube the night shining into or out of the sink holes creates a surreal object and space.
Miwa Koizumi‘s work with PET bottles is also another inspiring one. I find her stuff to be great inspiration in thinking about the final presentation in terms of story telling, creating a scene or showing performance through the work. Rather than presenting on a flat 2d medium i’ld like to bring it out more, and get more involvement. I’m not sure how to do this yet but we’ll see.

On a more garden-y note using used nappies in roof top gardening because of their nitrogen content and absorbency.

Thats about it from me, see you in class.

Last semester back in Kingston we did a short project entitled ‘As If By Magic’ the idea of the project was to invent an imaginary product and present it visually in a short 1 minute film using only basic filming techniques. The best videos manage to tell a simple story that clearly explains the product. Here are a few examples;
Follow The Balloon
Happy Birthday
Clear Grenade
Zebra Crossing

Sometimes I think that a product itself can tell a story or indeed inform us of our surroundings; this is most interesting when it creates interactions with things that we are not normally aware of. The RCA in London run a course called ‘Design Interactions’ which looks critically on how we, human beings interact and use our surroundings. One particular project by Dunne & Raby entitled ‘Placebo’ examines the unseen effects of technology investigating peoples’ attitudes to and experiences of electromagnetic fields in the home.

TV ads seem to be good examples of storytelling as they have to get a message across visually and in a relatively short period of time. Although they don’t necessarily explain how a product works or functions I think we can learn a lot from their style and format. Comedy is used a lot in commercials as it helps to simplify messages and if the ad works well the joke will stick in your mind. This John Smiths ad is a good example.
Some campaigns build up a story over a series of short commercials and so creating an affiliation with their audiences. The Apple Mac adverts did this particularly well in their ‘Mac PC’ series. Each of these ads works as they are simple and informative emphasizing just 1 point each.

I also really like some of the Honda Ads. They don’t so much tell a story but totally captivate the audience in the product.
Honda Accord ‘Cog’ Ad
Honda Civic ‘Choir‘ Ad
